Coval Homes
https://covalhomes.com/In this month’s feature, we asked Coval Homes Director of Operations Jason Riipinen to share some insight on building HERS® homes for their customers.
Q: What is special about a HERS® Rated home?
A: Jason: It’s a 3rd party score that communicates a home’s energy-efficiency. The owners of homes with lower scores can expect: reduced cost in energy bills, increased comfort, higher home resale value, and are seen as stewards of the environment–reducing their carbon footprint. Lastly, all HERS-rated home scores are registered and accessible for validation on RESNET.
Q: Why should consumers ask for the HERS® Index Score on homes they are shopping for?
A: Jason: It verifies a builder’s responsibility to the customer, environment, and community. In addition to being informed regarding the home’s energy consumption output, it also aligns with environmentally conscious priorities and contributes to a more sustainable future.
Q: Why does Coval Homes choose to have their homes HERS® Rated?
A: Jason: At Coval Homes, we don’t just build houses, we build homes for the future. And in that future, sustainability and efficiency are paramount. That’s why we wholeheartedly embrace HERS ratings on every single one of our homes. It corroborates our efforts to create comfortable, environmentally sound designs, and creates a marketing edge for us as the builder, but the real winner is the environment.
Q: Why consumers should expect energy-efficient homes?
A: Jason: It should be expected as the world is educated on the benefits of building energy-efficient homes. Energy use has many negative impacts on the world we live in, using it wisely is a responsibility of all. Beyond these benefits, expecting energy-efficient homes sends a powerful message to builders like Coval Homes. It encourages us to prioritize sustainable practices and innovate in energy-saving technologies, ultimately leading to a better housing market for everyone.
Q: How many homes does Coval Homes build with HERS® per year?
A: Jason: In 2023, we built over 75 HERS-rated homes. In 2022 and 2021 both we built over 50 homes.
Q: How do you market HERS® Rated homes?
A: Jason: Much of our HERS content is available on our website covalhomes.com, in social media where we engage in home-building discussions, and in person to our customers once their homes are officially rated.
Q: How do your customers feel about HERS® Rated homes?
A: Jason: Overall really positive so far, however, we are working on creating a customer feedback platform to get this data from them. Ultimately, building HERS-rated homes isn’t just about a score on paper – it’s about creating happy, comfortable, and sustainable living spaces for our customers. And their positive feedback tells us we’re achieving just that.
